Russian painter, graphic artist and teacher. Born in the family of a famous artist V. Makovsky. In 1884 - 1889 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting under the guidance of I. Pryanishnikov, V. Polenov, V. Makovsky, in 1891-1893 - at the studio of F. Cormon in Paris, in 1894-1895 - the Higher Art School of the St. Petersburg Academy under the guidance of I. Repin. In 1886 participated in exhibitions of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers (prior to 1900, with interruptions), the Union of the Russian Watercolorists (1897), Spring exhibitions in the halls of the Academy of Arts (1893 - 1898, 1912).Since 1893, member of the Moscow Association of Artists, since 1899 - Peredvizhniki, the exhibitor of all exhibitions of the Association since 1894 till 1922. Many traveled to Russia. In 1911-1913, visited Italy and Germany. In 1911 was elected as an academician. In the same year he exhibited his paintings at the World Exhibition in Rome. In 1913, was awarded a gold medal at the exhibition of the Munich Secession. In 1913-1919 he taught at the Higher Art School in Petersburg, since 1914 - professor. Worked in the field of book graphics, in 1922 his works were exhibited at the International Book Fair in Florence. In 1905, wrote and published the "Guidance for Teachers of Drawing", in 1918 - "The Experience of Oil Painting." The author of  landscapes, portraits and genre scenes. His works are presented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, and many other museums in Russia.
