Legashov Anton Mykhaylovych, 1798 - 1865

A Russian painter, watercolorist and engraver. Born in Penza province. From 1817 till 1824 he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the portraiture class of O. Varnek. In 1824 he received the first and the second silver medals, in 1929 Р the rank of extra-class artist. In 1830 under advice of the president of the Academy of Arts O. Olenin he was accepted on the staff of the XIth Beijing spiritual mission as an artist. While in Beijing, he painted 34 portraits and 13 genre pictures. He worked at the images for Uspenska Church in Beijing, restored ancient icons, studied Chinese painting. In 1842 he returned to St. Petersburg. He taught painting at St. Petersburg Institute of Technology (1842 - 1852). He painted pictures using Chinese motifs and themes. Author of landscapes, portraits, genre scenes and still lives. His works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Seaside Art Gallery, and in other museums and private collections.
