One of the most respected Ukrainian artists in France, painter and graphic artist. Born in the village of Vilhivtsi, Khmelnytsky region. Sister of the famous writer and cultural activist M. Levytskyy. In 1894 she studied in the private art school of T. Kazanovskyy in Zhytomyr. She continued her education in the studio of S. Svitoslavskyy in Kyyiv. In 1905 she moved to Paris where she entered the School of Fine Arts. She was in friendly terms with the representatives of Fauvism R. Dufy and J. Dufy, A. de Segonzac, J. Marchand (who became her husband). She quickly joined progressive literary circles and formed her own distinctive style, which, according to the famous avant-garde poet G. Apollinaire, impressed with its depth and poetry of national tradition. With great success she exhibited her works in numerous salons: Autumn (1910 - 1913, 1919 - 1925, 1927 - 1934), Independent (1910 - 1914, 1920 - 1922), Tuileries (1929, 1932, 1933). In 1912 she participated in the French exhibition called "Modern Art" in Moscow together with H. Matisse, A. Lot, A. Marquet, J. L_ger, etc. Together with the poet R. Allyar she translated into French and made illustrations for ТVechory na hutori bilya DykankaУ ("The Evenings on the hill near Dikanka") by M. Gogol (1921). She achieved high skill in engraving on wood (xylography). Graphic Art Nouveau of the artist caused a significant response in the exhibitions of "Modern Ukrainian Graphics" (1932), the Association of Independent Ukrainian Artists (1933) - both in Lviv, "Female artists of Europe" (1932) in Paris. Her personal exhibitions took place in 1913, 1924, 1930, 1938 (all - in Paris). She illustrated numerous books, collaborated with such magazines as "Musical Review", "Tresor de la biblio-theque", etc. In 1937 there was created the Society of Sophiya LevytskaХs friends, which organized two memorial exhibitions of the artist in Paris (1938). Bright representative of the Paris School of Montparnasse. She was engaged in decorative projects, painted fairy motifs, scenes of rural life, landscapes, portraits and still lives. Her works are presented in the Montparnasse Museum and the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Albertina Gallery in Vienna, Le Havre museum and in many other cities.
