A Ukrainian and Russian painter, graphic artist, watercolorist. Born in Kologryv, Kostroma province. In 1870 he entered St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, in 1873 under the influence of relationship with I. Kramskoy and I. Shyshkin, he changed for the class of landscape painting of M. Klodt. In 1879 he graduated from the Academy of Arts with the title of the 2nd degree artist. Since 1874 he participated in the exhibitions of the Academy of Arts, the Society for the Promotion of Artists, the Society of Russian watercolorists, etc. The founding member and the exhibitor of the Society of southern Russian artists. He taught at Odessa Drawing School (1884 - 1914), among his students there were such artists as Y. Bershadskyy and I. Brodskyy. In 1886 and 1899 his personal exhibitions took place in Odessa. Academician since 1910. He gathered a large collection of fine art and antiques, which later he gave to the city of Kologryv. Author of landscapes, portraits and genre paintings. His works are presented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Odessa Art Museum, etc.
