A Russian painter, graphic artist, book illustrator, caricaturist. Born in the village of Shchelkunovo, Tula province. He studied at the factory art studio under the guidance of G. Shegal, at the Higher state artistic and technical workshops (1921 - 1928) under the guidance of O. Osmyorkin, A. Shevchenko, then in the postgraduate course under the guidance of P. Konchalovsky. Since 1924 he was a member of the famous creative group "Kukryniksy" together with M. Kupriyanov and M. Sokolov, with whom he created several thousand caricatures, hundreds of posters, illustrations for works by M. Gorky, A. Chekhov, M. Saltykov-Shchedrin, I. Ilf and E. Petrov. He worked a lot in the open air, especially in his favorite places - on the Oka shores, in Polenovo, in Kostroma. Hero of Socialist Labour, People's Artist of the USSR since 1951, member of the Academy of Arts in the USSR since 1947, winner of the Lenin Prize in 1965, six times he was awarded with the State Prize of the USSR, the winner of the State Prize of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic named after Ilya Repin. The artist's works are kept in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Art Museum named after P. Krylov in Tula, in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
