A Russian painter, graphic artist, illustrator. Born in Kharkiv province, in a noble family. His grandfather, V. Karazin, was the founder of Kharkiv University. During 1860 - 1870 he was in the army, took part in Bukhara and Hivynskyy campaigns. From 1876 till 1878 he participated in the Serbian-Turkish campaign as an artist-correspondent. He had orders, was awarded a gold weapon. In the years of 1865 - 1867 he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts as an auditor (under the guidance of B. Villevalde). Since 1870 he professionally painted, was engaged in ethnographic patterns and literature. Since 1879 he was the member of Russian Geographical Society. In 1885 he received the title of the honorary free partaker of the Academy of Arts, since 1907 - Academician of the Academy of Arts. He was widely known in Russia in the second half of the •§•th century. He lived and worked in St. Petersburg.
