Russian painter and graphic artist, landscape painter. Born in Novocherkassk. In 1884 - 1889 studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the guidance of  V.Makovsky, V. Polenov, I. Pryanishnikov and E. Sorokin, in 1889 - under the guidense of  Ivan Aivazovsky in Feodosia. In 1904 - 1908 visited Italy and Switzerland. He lived and worked in Moscow. Participated in exhibitions of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers (1890 - 1906), the Moscow Society of Artists (1894 - 1904), Peredvizhniki (1904 - 1907), a Spring exhibitions in the halls of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1898 - 1902), the 17th exhibition of St. Petersburg Society of Artists (1909), international exhibitions in Vienna (1895) and Munich (1901). Solo exhibitions were held in Moscow (1904, 1908) and Khabarovsk (1912). In 1916 the Stroganov School sent him to Siam in order to gather a collection for the School Museum. During this journey, he held exhibitions in Irkutsk, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Harbin (all - in 1916 - 1917) and Shanghai (1918). Several years lived in India, where he was a court painter in the palace of a wealthy raja. He received a large collection of ancient Indian art as a gift from raja. He moved from India to Australia, and thence in 1924 to San Francisco. He bequeathed all of his works and collections to the Stroganov School Museum. His works are introduced in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Far Eastern Art Museum (Khabarovsk), the National Gallery of Modern Art (Rome) and others.
