A Russian painter, author of numerous portraits and interiors. Born in the village of Lyady, Mogilev Province, Belarus, the family of serfs. In the mid 1830s he studied under the guidance of O. Venetsianov, in the years of 1834 - 1838 Р at the Academy of Arts in the St. Petersburg, after which he won the title of a free artist. Since 1843 - Academician of the Academy of Arts, since 1850 - professor. He was a teacher at the Alexander Institute for orphans and at the Palace architecture school in Moscow, then in Konstyantyinovskyy Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg. In 1856 he held the position of inspector and of a senior professor in Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He belonged to the circle of the most popular and prestigious portrait painters of the nineteenth century. The portraits of the artist differed by their photographic similarity with the model and carefully transferred accessories and clothing.
