One of the greatest masters of the European landscape painting of the second half of the XIXth century, representative of the academic art, successor of the traditions of Düsseldorf school. Born in Ahrensburg, Estlyandska Province (now Estonia). In 1858 he studied at the sculpture studio of Professor D. Iensen in St. Petersburg, from 1858 till 1862 - in St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the class of landscape painting under the guidance of S. Vorobyov. During the years of training he was awarded two silver medals (1859, 1860) and two gold medals (1861, 1862). In 1862 he won the title of the 1st class artist and the right for a pension traveling abroad. In the years of 1863 - 1869 he traveled through Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and France. He worked mainly in Dusseldorf. In 1868 he was awarded the title of the academician. At the end of his pension he remained in Dusseldorf. He repeatedly visited Russia and Estonia. Since 1872 he taught at Düsseldorf Academy of Arts, professor. Honorary Member of Berlin and Stockholm Academies of Arts. Member of the Union of the watercolourists in Vienna and Brussels. He regularly sent his works to the exhibitions in Russia. In 1873 "for the excellent knowledge in landscape painting" he was promoted to the title of the professor of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He participated in the exhibitions of the Academy of Arts, the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, the Society of the exhibitions of the works of art, the Society of Russian watercolorists (since 1912 - an honorary member). Exhibitor of numerous World and International exhibitions in London, Paris, Munich, Vienna, Berlin, Chicago and Rome. In addition to painting he was involved in etching. His works are presented in the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, in the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, in the Estonian Art Museum in Tallinn, in Berlin National Gallery and in many others.
