A German painter and graphic artist. Born in the town of Bayreuth, Bavaria. From 1853 to 1855 he studied at the Polytechnic School in Munich, and since 1855 - at Munich Academy of Arts in the art studio of K. von Piloty. In the years of 1871 - 1907 he was considered one of the best teachers of the Academy of Arts. Many of his students became famous artists, such as a brilliant representative of German Expressionism M. Slefott and one of the main organizers of the art society "The Blue Rider" F. Marc. Worked as an illustrator in magazine "The Flying Leaves". Illustrated "History of the Thirty YearsХ War" by F. Schiller. He was awarded the Great Gold Medal at the Munich International Exhibition (1883). Author of genre scenes, battle compositions and landscapes. A talented graphic artist, aquarellist. The works are kept in the National Gallery in Berlin, the New Pinakoteca in Munich, the Dresden Picture Gallery, the art museums of Wroclaw, Leipzig, Hamburg and other German museums.
