A Russian battle and genre painter. Born in Kursk, in the family of a squireen. In1850 he attended the Drawing School of the Society for Encouraging Arts in St. Petersburg. He graduated from Petersburg Academy of Arts, the battle painting class in B. Villevalde Studio (1851 - 1863). He was awarded medals - three silver medals (1854, 1857, 1858)...

He graduated from Petersburg Academy of Arts, the battle painting class in B. Villevalde Studio (1851 - 1863). He was awarded medals - three silver medals (1854, 1857, 1858) and two gold medals(1860, 1862). Pensioner of the Academy of Arts in Germany, Italy, and France (1863 - 1872). In 1865 he traveled to the Caucasus, where he created a big series of landscapes, genre and battle scenes. In 1872 for his painting "The hill-men leaving the aul at the approach of RussiansУ he got title of the academician of the Academy of Arts. Since 1872 he had lived in St. Petersburg. He worked a great deal through the request of the royal family, the imperial court and various illustrated magazines. Participated in the World Exhibitions in London (1872), Vienna (1873), Philadelphia (1876), Berlin (1891), all-Russian Exhibition in Moscow (1882). The works are stored in the State Russian Museum, the state Tretyakov Gallery, picture galleries and art museums of Odessa, Tula, Voronezh, Khabarovsk, Novorossiysk, Krasnodar, Sevastopol, Yekaterinburg, private collections in Russia, Ukraine, etc.
