A Ukrainian painter. Born in the village of Gromnytsya, now Dnipropetrovs'k region. He began his studies in the art studio of V. Serov in St. Petersburg, and continued them at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in I. RepinХs class. During the First World War he happened to get to Prague, where he continued his art education in a private studio of a landscape painter F. Enhelmuller, where with time he became an assistant, and then in the Ukrainian studio of plastic arts. From 1922 to 1925 he studied in the art studio of H. Matisse in Paris. Owing to H. Matisse, as well as the support of P. Picasso, he succeeded to open his solo exhibition in Paris in 1925. He carried out his studio trip to Italy, India, Tibet, Japan, the USA, and at the invitation of the King worked in Norway. In 1928 he returned to Prague. In 1945 was forcibly taken to the USSR and served in the Soviet Army. In 1952 he moved to Prague where he lived until his death. One of the best-known post-war Prague artists, author of numerous landscapes, portraits and still lifes. His solo exhibitions were held in Paris, Vienna, Prague, Svidnik (Slovakia). The works are stored in the museums and private collections in Ukraine, Slovakia, France, Czech Republic, Norway, and the USA.
