A famous Russian artist, landscape painter. Born in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg). In the years of 1930 - 1932 he studied at the S. Zaidenberg studio. From 1932 to 1939 he learned arts from S. Abugov and V. Yakoblyev at Leningrad. Since 1946 he had been a participant of all-Union exhibitions, by virtue of which he ranked among the leading artists of the Soviet postwar painting. The works were exhibited at numerous international exhibitions in Hungary, Finland, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Syria, the Venice Biennale (1956 and 1958). In 1966 he became the academician-secretary at the Painting Department of the USSR Academy of Arts. Author of several articles on fine arts. Since 1948 he had been a lecturer at Moscow art Institute, and since 1966 Р its professor and head of the art studio. Honored Arts Worker of the the RSFSR in 1959, People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1963, the USSR State Prize winner (1951 and 1952) and the State Prize of the RSFSR n.a. I. Repin (1973), People's Artist of the USSR in 1974. Lived and worked in Moscow.
