A bright representative of northern Dutch school of painting in the period of its prosperity. Born in Harlem, the Netherlands. He studied under the guidance of the famous Dutch painter P. Wouwerman. From 1645 till 1673 he worked in Harlem, was a member of the Painters’ Guild of St. Luke. The first notable work of the artist is dated as 1657. Between 1661 and 1673 he moved to Amsterdam. Master of landscape and genre painting, his creative artistic work was dominated by "Italian" landscapes with staffage. His works are presented in the State Hermitage, in the Art Museums of Haarlem, Leiden, Brussels, Rotterdam, Dortmund, Glasgow, Stockholm, Berlin, Vienna, etc.
