A Russian painter, landscape painter. Born in the village of Sofiino, Samara province. The son of the Austrian merchant, in1889 adopted Russian citizenship. He studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1885 – 1891) attending the class in landscape painting led by M. Claude. For his student works he was repeatedly awarded medals. He received the title of a class artist of the 1st degree and the right to make a pensioner trip abroad. During 1892 – 1894, he visited Italy, Germany and Switzerland. On returning to Russia, he often traveled to Ukraine. Partcipated in the exhibitions of Moscow Society of Art Lovers (1887 – 1899) and St. Petersburg Artists’ Society (1894 – 1916), the artists’ Society n.a. A. Kuindzhi (1917 – 1926, since 1909 was a member of the Society). He appeared to be a follower of Russian landscape school traditions. In his work he skillfully used the achievements of the Wanderers, organically combining the realistic features with academic principles of the painting composition. His big art heritage is preserved in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the art museums of Irkutsk, Kursk, Penza, Perm, Omsk, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, etc.
