Van Dael Jan France (Jean Francois), 1764 – 1840A celebrated Flemish and French painter, master of floral still life. Born in Antwerp. Since 1776, he studied in Antwerp Academy of Art. In 1786, he moved to Paris where he began writing still lives with flowers and fruits. The works of the artist quickly gained popularity and recognition. During 1793 – 1833, he was a permanent member of Paris salons, exhibited his works in the exhibitions in Antwerp, the Hague, Ghent and Brussels. He was a member of Antwerp and Amsterdam Academies of Arts. The patrons and clients of the master at different times were Josephine Beauharnais, Marie-Louise Bonaparte, Louis XVIII and Charles X. In his creative work the traditions of Flemish of floral still life and French painting were inextricably intertwined. He was engaged in lithography. He painted also landscapes, religious and allegorical pictures. His works are kept in the Louvre, in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, in the Museum of Art and Antiquities in the Cambridge University, in the Art Museums of Rouen, Lyon, Lille, Grenoble, etc.
