Russian and Belarusian painter and graphic artist. One of the greatest Russian landscape painters of the first half of the twentieth century. Born in the village of Krynky, Mogilev Province. In 1885 - 1889 studied at the Kiev drawing school under the guidance of N. Murashko, in 1889 - 1896 - at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the guidance of I. Pryanishnikov Nevrev M., S. Korovin, V. Polenov. Heeded Levitan's advices. Lived in Moscow, systematically worked in the Tver province. Member and exhibitor of Moscow Society of Art Lovers (1897 - 1907), the Moscow Society of Artists (1897 - 1903), Peredvizhniki (1898 - 1918). In 1899 won the first prize named after V. Botkin at the competition of Moscow Society of Art Lovers. In 1901 was awarded a gold medal at the Caucasian anniversary exhibition in Tiflis, in 1909 - Gold Medal at the International Exhibition in Munich, in 1911 - 1912 - bronze medal at the International Exhibition in Barcelona. In 1908 awarded the title of academician. Traveled a lot:: visited France, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway. In 1912 together with A. Stepanov, S. Zhukovsky, A. Moravov and M. Bogdanov-Belsky founded the creative colony on Lake Udomlia in Tver province. One of the founders of the association "Yzohraf" (1918). In 1919 - 1920 organized several schools in Moscow and Tver provinces, where he taught drawing. Member and exhibitor of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1922), Combining of realist artists (1927 - 1928). Participant of all-Union exhibitions and exhibitions of Soviet art abroad. Held solo exhibitions in Moscow (1936, 1937, 1947, 1954). Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1937, People's Artist of the BSSR in 1944, People's Artist of the USSR in 1947, a member of the USSR Academy of Arts in 1947. The works are presented in State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the National Art Museum of Belarus and Moldova, Kiev National Museum of Russian Art, and others.
