A leading Dutch painter, graphic artist and etcher. He studied in Utrecht (the Netherlands) under the tutelage of his father D. Both and a famous master of historical and landscape painting A. Blumart. Together with his brother, the artist A. Both, he travelled around France and Italy for some time. During 1635 Р 1641 he lived in Rome and Venice, and the last decade of his life he spent in Utrecht. In 1635, he was admitted to Saint Luke Academy in Rome. The works are often the compositions featuring an "italizated" landscape, usually decorated with ancient buildings or ruins and staffage figures of people. A distinctive feature of the landscape is a golden colour, and we can say that along with the works of the master the sunlight came in the Dutch landscape painting. He was a very famous painter during his lifetime, he executed a large number of paintings ordered by the people belonging to the European court circles. He had a lot of followers; in particular, he greatly influenced on the creative work of J. Venix and A. Keip. His works are stored in many museum collections in the world, including the Hermitage, the National London Gallery, Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, as well as in the art museums of Berlin, Dusseldorf, Munich and Brussels.
