Bolotowsky Ilya Yuliyovych, 1907 – 1981An artist of the Russian emigration, painter, teacher, writer. Born in St. Petersburg. In 1917 he emigrated to Constantinople, in 1923, he moved to the United States. From 1924 till 1930 he studied in New York at the National Academy of Arts under the guidance of I. Olynskiy. Together with M. Rothko, he was a member of the art group “Desyat” ("Ten") (1936 - 1938). In 1936, he became a founding member and the president of the organization called "American Abstract Artists", the main goal of which was to promote abstract art and support artists. He was the founding member, and later – the Vice President of "The Federation of contemporary painters and sculptors". He performed one of the first U.S. monumental abstract painting - a panel for the company Williamsburg Housing Project in New York (1936). He participated in many group exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe, spent about 30 solo exhibitions, including exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum (1974) and in the Washburn gallery (1981) in New York. He was the Winner of the National Art Academy (1925 and 1926), funds of Hallgarten and L.-K. Tiffany (1929, 1930), also he got Grand Prix of New York Museum of pointless painting (1941); he was the winner of the prize for an abstract painting of the National Institute of Arts and Literature (1971) and got Grand Prix of Memorial Fund of John S. Guggenheim. In the 1950s and 1960s he taught at American universities and colleges, in 1973 he ruled the art department at the college in Southampton. He is known as the author of about forty short films dedicated to the contemporary art. For his work in the field of cinematography, he won the award of Chicago University at Midwest Film Festival (1963). He wrote short stories, plays, and opera librettos, he is the author of "Russian - English Dictionary of painting and sculpture" (1962). His works are presented in the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Philadelphia Art Museum, in Jerusalem, etc.
