An outstanding Russian artist and genre painter. Born in the village of Shytyky, Bielsk District, Smolensk Province, Russia. During 1882 – 1883 he studied at the icon-painting workshop in the Laura of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius. In 1884, he entered Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied under the tutelage of V. Polenov, V. Makovsky and I. Pryanyshnykov. In 1889, he got a large silver medal and the title of a class artist. In 1890 made a trip to Constantinople and the Mount Athos. During 1894 – 1895, he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under the guidance of I. Repin, then - in Paris at art studios of F.Cormon and F. Kolarossi. Lived and worked in St. Petersburg. Since1890 he had participated in the exhibitions of Association of Itinerant Art Exhibitions (member of the Association since1895), Moscow Association of Art Lovers, Association of Petersburg artists, international exhibitions in Paris, Rome, New York, Prague (in 1928 one work of his was acquired by the Paris National Gallery), Copenhagen, Amsterdam , Berlin, and Belgrade. His solo exhibitions were held in Petrograd (1921) and Riga (1922 - 1940). In 1903, he received the title of an academician and in 1914 became a full-fledged member of the Academy of Arts. Painted portraits of many famous figures of the time: the historian M. Barsukov, the teacher S. Rachynskyi, the singer F. Chaliapin, Nicholas II, Knyaz F. Yusupov et al. In the years of 1913 – 1918 he headed the Committee of the Partnership named after A. Kuindzhi. The works were reproduced in magazines "Niva", "The Art Treasures of Russia", and "Capital and Country Estate". In 1921 settled in Riga, where he continued to work hard. Became widely famous as a master of genre painting, including paintings devoted to rural kids and school. His works are represented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Riga Art Museum, the Russian Cultural-Historical Museum in Prague, etc.
