A Russian painter. Born in Vitebsk, Belarus. He studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under the tutelage of I. Repin (1893 - 1900). He graduated from the Academy with the title of an unclassed artist. Since 1899 he had been a participant of the exhibitions at the Academy of Arts, the Association of Moscow Artists, the New ArtistsХ Association, the group "Sixteen", the association "World of Art", the Association of the Artists of Revolution and others. The works were exhibited in Munich (1911, 1913), where they were awarded gold medals, and in New York (1924). A co-founder of the Association of Russian Artists and an active participant of its exhibitions (1911 - 1917). He was a friend of M. Gorkyi, and the name of the artist is once and again found in the writer’s letters. In 1910, he came to Capri and made a series of landscapes there. In 1916 he became an academician and in 1921 Р a professor of the Academy. Paid much attention to educational activities, teaching at the Drawing School of the Association for Encouraging Arts in St. Petersburg (1904 - 1919), College of the Fleet Command Staff (1920 - 1922), and Petrograd Free Art and Educational Studios (later reorganized in Higher Art and Technical Institute (1921 - 1929). The works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, in the art museums of Yaroslavl, Astrakhan, Novosybirsk, Tyumen, Krasnodar and others.
