Russian and Italian artist. Born in Rome. He studied at the Academy of St. Luke in Rome. Since 1859 he lived and worked in St. Petersburg, where became famous as a master of portraiture. Russian and Italian artist. Born in Rome. He studied at the Academy of St. Luke in Rome. Since 1859 he lived and worked in St. Petersburg, where became famous as a master of portraiture. Since 1860 had been an active exhibitor of the academic exhibitions. Painted the ceiling in the royal lodge of the Mariinsky Theatre, plafond in Tsarskoye Selo palace church. In 1861 received the title of portraiture academician. Since 1863 free honorary companion of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1869 held at the Academy personal charity exhibition for the benefit of poor students, widows and orphans of the artists. In 1870 was awarded the 2nd degree Order of St. Stanislaus. In the same year created and donated to the Museum of Arts "Bather after a bath" painting, which became the most famous work of the master. In 1871, by order of the Grand Duke Nicholai Roerich created the author's version of this picture, which  decorated the princely palace in Tashkent.  Now it is kept in the collection of the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan in Tashkent. His works are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, Odessa, Sevastopol Art Museums and many others.
