A famous French painter and graphic artist. Born in Besançon, France. He studied at the studio of J. Gigoux in Paris. After a long creative journey through Italy, he settled in Paris. He made his debut at the Salon in Paris in 1840. He gained the first big success in Salon in 1845, he was awarded the medals at the Salons in 1847, 1848, 1855 and in 1867. He participated in the World Exhibitions in Paris (1855, 1867). Since 1879, he permanently exhibited watercolors at the shows of the French Watercolorists’ Union. He also illustrated the works of Honoré de Balzac, Giovanni Boccaccio and others. He contributed to such magazines as Magasin picturesque, Gil Blas, Roland furieux. He made many lithographs of his own pictures and of the other famous artists’ paintings. He is the author of historical scenes of secular life, non-oriental and allegorical compositions. His works are stored in Paris, Besançon, Geneva, London, Luxemburg, Chantilly, etc.
