Russian painter. Born in the city of Kostroma, Russia. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under the guidance of I. Pryanishnikov, V. Polenov, V. Serov and V. Makovsky. He worked at the portrait studio of Serov. On the recommendation of Valentin Serov was to portray the aristocracy of Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as wealthy patrons. The painting "Patron" was presented at the exhibition in the Noble Assembly and had considerable success. Exhibitor of  the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki), and the Association of Moscow artists. In 1904 in Kostroma opened art classes of drawing, painting and sculpting. The school of Shlein was considered as one of the leading art schools in Russia. Since 1924, it had three main courses, after which the students received the title of an art teacher. In 1944 the school was reorganized in Kostroma Art School. In 1960, on the basis of the art school of N. Shlein, the graphic arts department of the Kostroma State University named after Nekrasov was opened. His works are kept in many museums, in particular more than 100 of his works are stored in the Kostroma Museum of Art.
