A prominent Russian landscape painter, graphic artist and engraver. Born in Yelabuga, Russia. From 1853 till 1856 he studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the guidance of K. Rabus and A. Mokrytskyy, since 1856 - in St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under the guidance of S. Vorobyov. In 1860 he received a big gold medal and the right for pension travel, in 1865 - the title of the academician. In 1866 he returned to Russia, almost annually he exhibited his works at the exhibitions of the Academy of Arts, and later Р in the shows of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, member of which he was. Professor of landscape painting since 1873, member of the Academy of Arts since 1893. In 1892 he led the landscape workshop in the Academy of Arts and in 1895 he was appointed the professor-director of St. Petersburg High Art School of the Academy of Arts. The largest collection of his works is stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, in addition, his works are kept in the collections of the State Russian Museum, the Memorial Museum of I. Shyshkin in Yelabuga, in Kyiv National Museum of the Russian Art, in the Art Museums of Odessa, Kharkiv, Lugansk, etc.
