A well-known French graphic and poster artist, painter. Born in Paris. He was a student of an engraver-lithographer, illustrated journals and designed various printed materials. For several years he studied graphic technology in London, from where in 1866 he brought to Paris the latest lithographic machine, which allowed printing sheets of large format. He opened his own studio and began to produce artistically innovative posters and bills, which caused a sensation in the second half of 1860s and opened the way for the development of contemporary advertising. In 1889 and 1890 his solo exhibitions were held in Paris. For a great contribution to the French art he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor. Author of numerous works made in the techniques of easel and watercolour painting. He painted secular urban scenes, images of women and floral still lives. In Nice the Museum of Fine Arts named after J. Cheret was opened.
