A Russian painter and graphic artist. Born in the village of Zhukivka, Kaluga Province. From 1868 till 1877 he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. Since 1870 he exhibited his works at the shows in the Academy of Arts. In 1871 he was awarded two small and two large silver medals, in 1874 - a small gold medal. In 1877 he won the title of the class artist of the 1st grade, in 1890 - the title of the academician. He lived in St. Petersburg. He painted portraits, historical and genre paintings. In 1880 he worked at the request of Grand Duke Volodymyr Olexandrovych, performed a series of historical paintings devoted to the reign of Ivan the Terrible. He created sketches for 24 mosaics in the Church of the Resurrection (the Savior on Blood) in St. Petersburg. His works are presented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Penza Art Gallery, in the Art Museums of the Far East, Khabarovsk, Saratov, in the State museum-monument "St. Isaac's Cathedral", etc.
