A well-known representative of Paris school of painting. Born in Daugavpils, Latvia. He studied at the art schools in Kharkiv and Kyiv. In 1919 led the drawing school in Yekaterynoslav (now Dnipropetrovsk). In 1921 he arrived in Petrograd, continued his studying in the Public free art workshop, supervised the children's art school. In 1920s he was engaged in scenography in Petrograd and Moscow theaters. He participated in the exhibitions of the Art Bureau of N. Dobychyna (1922), "The paintings by Petrograd artists of all trends" (1923), the group "The Art United" (1925). In 1925 he settled in Paris. Since 1926 he exhibited his works in the salons: Autumn, Tuileries, Independent, Populiste, since 1935 Р in the salon of Independent artists. He held solo exhibitions in such galleries as Kleinman (1930), Bonaparte (1936), de L'Elysee (1946); he participated in the numerous exhibitions of the Russian art, particularly in the exhibition "The Russian artists of Paris School" (1961). He performed the lithographs for the book of D. Knut "Selected Poems" (Paris, 1949). In 1960 he published the book of memoirs about the famous group of artists La Ruche. He contributed into the preservation of La Ruche, when the building was going to be destroyed. His works are presented at the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the Art Institute of Chicago.
