A Russian painter. Born in the village of Medvenka, Kursk province. He graduated from the drawing school in Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. In 1890s he was in St. Petersburg, he studied in the studio of I. Repin for some time. In 1903 as an icon painter he participated in the decoration of the Russian church in Florence. From 1905 till 1911 he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under the guidance of V. Savinskiy, J. Tsionglinskyy, V. Makovskyy. He graduated from the academy with the title of the artist. Pensioner of the Academy of Arts in Italy, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium (1912 - 1914). After returning to Russia he lived in St. Petersburg, but in summer he moved to Medvenka where he drew numerous sketches, taking into account the advice of I. Repin: "Do not paint Italy, paint Kursk province". Member of the Society named after A. Kuindzhi, of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (since 1922). One of the first authors of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia that turned to the outstanding domestic episodes of the Soviet period. He taught at Leningrad studio of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1926 - 1929), the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1938 - 1940), Moscow Municipal Pedagogical Institute named after V. Potyomkin (1945 - 1949). Professor since 1938. Honored Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic since 1946. He lived and worked in Leningrad, since 1940 - in Moscow. He played a significant role in the development of the Soviet genre painting. He worked as well in the genres of portrait and landscape. His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, in Kursk Art Gallery named after O. Deyneka, in Krasnodar Art Museum.
