A famous French and British painter, engraver and lithographer. Born in Les Andelys, France. Since 1840 he studied at Paris School of Fine Arts under the guidance of M.-M. Droling. Since 1847 - permanent exhibitor of Parisian salons and London Academy of Arts, where the masterХs works were repeatedly awarded with medals. He was famous as the author of sophisticated female portraits made in the tradition of British portraiture of the XVIIIth century. Favourite artist of the Emperor Napoleon III, Paris fashion legislator of the 1860s. Commander of the Legion of Honour Order (1878). He taught in his art studio for women, where such internationally known representatives of Impressionism as M. Cassatt M. and E. Gonz_lez began their career. He lived and worked in Paris. His works are presented in the State Hermitage, the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum, in the d'Orsay Museum and in other museums of Europe and the USA.
