A Russian painter, stage designer, book illustrator, and master of easel painting and theatre graphics. He was born in Grodno (now Belarus). Until 1894, he was an auditor to St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, and then he continued studying in Paris under the tutelage of A. Edelfeld. One of the organizers and active figures of the art association "World of Art". In 1898, together with S. Diaghilev took part in founding the same-name magazine. The graphic pictures published in this magazine brought fame to the artist. In the years of 1890 - 1917 he had been creating the covers and vignettes for magazines "Vesy", "Apollon", "Art Treasures of Russia", and cartoons for the satirical magazines like "Zhupel", "Adskaya pochta" and "Satiricon". Since 1890, he participated in the exhibitions of the Academy of Arts, Association of Russian Artists, Association of Russian Watercolorists, Union of Russian Artists, the associations ТWorld of ArtУ, Munich Secession and others. A distinguished master of theatrical costume. Made sketches of costumes and sets for plays of Olexandrynsky Theatre, the Hermitage Theatre, and made the design for a number of productions of S. Diaghilev troupe. In 1914, he received the title of an academician. After 1917 he lived and worked abroad: in Paris, Brussels, and Rome. His works are in the Tretyakov Gallery, in the State Museum of Russian Art and in many other museums around the world.
