English painter, portraitist, a master of historical painting. He was born in London. He attended Westminster School and then studied under the guidance of the well-known landscape painter F. de Kort, as well as under the guidance of C. Drummond and T. Lawrence. In 1804 he made his debut at the exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London where the presented portrait of the artist received a commendable assessment of critics. Made a series of portraits of famous actors, artists and political figures of the time. In 1818 he traveled to Italy, where he made a copy of Raphael's "Transfiguration" in full size in 18 days. For a high level of skill and working capacity was elected honorary member of the Academy of St. Luke in Rome. The works are presented in the Royal Academy of Arts, the Indianopolis Museum of Arts, the Museum of the University of Cambridge, the Denver Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Philadelphia Museum of Arts, the Art Museum of San Francisco, the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
