An outstanding Russian painter, graphic, theater and cinema artist. One of the most famous artists of Moscow School of Painting of the first half of the ••th century. Born in Moscow. From 1904 till 1905 he studied at the private school drawing and painting of K. Yuon, during 1905 - 1912 (with breaks) - in Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the guidance of A. Arkhypov, A. Vasnetsov, L. Pasternak, V. Serov, K. Korovin. Participant of the exhibitions since 1906. In college he made friends with I. Mashkov, P. Konchalovsky, O. Kuprin, A. Lentulov, with whom he created avant-garde artistic society called "The Jack of Diamonds" (1910). In 1911 he made a trip to Italy, where he studied classical Italian art, medieval architecture. Exhibitor and member of such associations as "The World of Arts" (1917 - 1922), the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia and the Union of Moscow Artists (1925 - 1928). He taught painting in the Public free art workshop - the Higher state artistic and technical workshops - the Higher Art and Technical Institute (1918 - 1928). From 1928 till 1938 he lived in France (mainly in Paris), participated in the exhibitions, designed performances. Participant of 75 republican, all-union and international exhibitions. He held 17 solo exhibitions (the first one was in the State Tretyakov Gallery, 1924). He painted landscapes, portraits, still lives. As a representative of "The Jack of Diamonds" he followed artistic principles of "Hezannizm". His works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Kyiv National Museum of the Russian Art, in the Art Museums of Odessa, Mykolayiv, Saratov, and in many others.
