A Russian painter, master of historical painting. Son of an apprentice of Peterhoff lapidary factory. In 1764 he was admitted to the first set of Educational College of Petersburg Academy of Arts. He studied in the class of historical painting. For his drawings from nature he was awarded a small silver (1773) and a large silver (1777) medals. In 1778 for the program "The Curse of Ham" he received a small gold medal, in 1779 for the program "The Prophet Elias raises the son of the widow from the dead" - a large gold medal. In 1779 as a pensioner of the Academy of Arts he was sent to Paris, where he studied under the guidance of L. Р J. Р F. Lagren_e, Senior. For the paintings "Murder of Abel" and "Volcano chains Prometheus" in 1784 he was recognized as "appointed" for the rank of the academician. In 1785 he received the title of the academician. Teacher of the Academy of Arts, Junior Professor since 1794, professor of historical painting since 1800. In the 1800s he painted a series of images for the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg. From 1818 till 1821 he was a director of the Imperial Manufacturer of Tapestry. In 1813 he performed a series of paintings devoted to the war of 1812 (the State Tretyakov Gallery).
