 A Russian and Ukrainian painter and graphic artist. Born in the village of Yakovlivka, now Kursk region. He received military engineering education in St. Petersburg. From 1845 till 1849 he attended classes in Petersburg Academy of Arts (he was a student of F. Bruni). In 1856 he was promoted to the extra-class artist, in 1861 - academician. Inspector of Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1871 - 1881). Since 1875 - Member of the Belgian royal society of watercolorists. In the years of 1860s - 1880s he worked in Ukraine for a long time. He created many paintings devoted to the Ukrainian village life. Known as an outstanding illustrator of the literary works of Ukrainian writers - M. Vovchok (1860), M. Gogol (1874 - 1876), T. Shevchenko (1885 - 1889). He participated in the publication of the album "Picturesque Ukraine" of L. Zhemchuzhnyko (1861 - 1862). Author of a series of drawings from the life of T. Shevchenko. His works were often published in the journal "Niva" (ТThe fieldУ) and "Hudozhestvennyy lystokУ (ТArt LeafletУ). His works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the National Art Museum of Ukraine and in the National Museum of Taras Shevchenko.
