A distinguished French painter, one of the brightest representatives of the Barbizon school. Born in S_vres, France. He studied under the guidance of the artist D.-D. Riocre Р the founder of the State Museum of Ceramics in Paris. From 1833 till 1859 he was a regular exhibitor in Paris salons, in 1846 and 1848 he was awarded medals. During 1836 - 1839 he traveled across Brittany, painted the landscapes of the region. In 1843 he met the founders of the Barbizon school T. Rousseau and J. Dupr_, accompanied them on their trips to the UK. In 1847 he traveled to the Netherlands. For many years he lived in Normandy. In his work he masterfully combined landscape and animalistic genres. He quickly gained popularity outside of France. He was elected a member of the jury of the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855. His solo exhibitions were held in Manchester, the Hague (1859), Brussels (1860), etc. His works are kept in the Louvre, d'Orsay Museum, the Hermitage, the State Museum of Fine Arts, the State Museum of Hendrik Willem Mesdag in the Hague, the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, etc.
