A well-known Flemish painter, author of numerous genre scenes, landscapes, animalistic and religious compositions. Son and student of Teniers David (Senior), son-in-law of J. Bruegel Junior, continuer of A. BrowserХs traditions. Born in Antwerp, Flanders. He worked in the same place, in 1632 he was admitted to the guild of painters. In 1652 he moved to Brussels, where he became a court painter and keeper of the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. He participated in the creation of Antwerp Academy of Arts. During his long creative life he worked in almost all genres, but he gained the greatest fame reproducing scenes of peasant life. The pictures of the master enjoyed huge demand in Europe of the XVII - XVIII centuries, his popularity was not less than the one of his countrymen P. P. Rubens and A. van Dyck. He often worked in collaboration with other Flemish painters. One of the largest collections of works by the artist is in the Hermitage, also his works are stored in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels, in the Art Galleries of Berlin and Dresden, in London National Gallery, Vienna Museum of Art and History, in the collections of the Prado, the Louvre, the Old Pinacotheca in Munich, etc.
