An Outstanding Russian artist, painter who had devoted his art work to the theme of the Russian peasantry. Born in the village of Yegorovo, Ryazan region. In the years of 1877 - 1883 and during 1886 - 1888 he studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (MSPSA) under the guidance of V. Perov, V. Polenov, I. Pryanishnikov, A. Savrasov, and V. Makovsky; from 1884 to 1886 he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under the tutelage of B. Villevalde. In 1887 he received a large silver medal and the title of a class artist. A member of the Association of Itinerant Art Exhibitions since 1891. From 1894 to 1918 he led the sketch-from-nature class of MSPSA. In 1898 he received the title of the academician. In 1904 he became one of the founders and a member of the Union of Russian Artists. In 1896 and 1912 he visited France, Germany and Italy and in 1912 was a frequent visitor to the Russian North. After the October Revolution he took part in the reorganization of MSPSA and from 1918 to 1920 he taught at the State Higher Art Studios and from 1922 to 1924 - at the Higher Art and Technical Studios. A member of the Association of Revolutionary Artists since 1924. In 1927 he was awarded the title of the People's Artist of the RSFSR. His works are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Museum of Russian Art, etc.
