He learned art from his father, and after moving to the UK he studied at the School of Arts of South Kensington (1856). Till 1880 he lived in Kent. Since 1877 he participated in the exhibitions of the Royal Society of the British Artists (its member since 1888). During 1883 - 1891 he lived in London, then he moved to Sussex. Member and exhibitor of the Royal British Society of colonial artists (since 1889), the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers and the Royal Cambrian Academy - the main art center of Wales. He became famous as an animal painter and a master of hunting scenes. He accompanied the King Edward VII to hunt in Scandinavia. He painted genre scenes and portraits. His works are presented in the museums of Britain.
