A Russian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, artist of portrait and landscape genres. Born in St. Petersburg in the family of the famous cultural worker, keeper of the Hermitage collections, A. Somov. From 1888 till 1897 he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the studio of I. Repin. In 1897, without finishing the Academy of Arts, he went to Paris where he continued his studying at the private studio of F. Colarossi. In 1899 he returned to St. Petersburg; he became one of the founders and active members of "The World of Arts" and of the magazine of the same name. He actively collaborated with the periodical "The Art Treasures of Russia" (1901 - 1907). He presented his works at the exhibitions of the associations "The World of Arts", "36 Artists" in Moscow (1902, 1903), of the Union of Russian Artists, at the Berlin Secession (1902), at the Autumn Salon (1906), at the exhibition in New York (1924), etc. His personal exhibitions were held in St. Petersburg (1903) and London (1930). He received the glory because of his paintings and graphic portraits. He completed a series of covers and frontispieces to the poetry books of symbolism (the collections of K. Balmont, A. Blok, V. Ivanov); among the illustrated cycles the most famous were "Count Nulyn" by O. Pushkin (1899), "Nevskyy Avenue" and "Nos" by M. GogolХ (1910). In 1913 he became an active member of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, in 1918 he became a professor the Public free art workshop in Petrograd. In 1923 together with "The Russian exhibition" he went to the United States as authorized by Petrograd, and he did not return home. In 1925 he settled in France. His works are kept in the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Museum of Fine Arts, in the Art Museums of Odessa and Saratov, in the Armenian National Art Gallery and in other museums and private collections.
