A Jewish and American painter and graphic artist. Born in Borysoglibsk, Russia, in the family of the Jewish writer A. Soyer. Since 1912 he lived in the USA. From 1914 till 1917 he studied at the art school ‘оореr Union, during 1918 - 1922 (with breaks) Р in the National Academy of Arts in New York and in the StudentsХ Art League of Guy Pen Dubois. In 1929 he became a founding member of John ReedХs Club. He organized the first solo exhibition in the Daniel gallery in New York; one picture was bought by the Whitney Museum of American Art. Since 1932 he annually held solo exhibitions. In the years of 1920 Р 1930 he painted scenes of the life of urban and working-class neighborhoods of New York, in the 1940s - portraits, nudes in interior, psychological scenes. In 1961 he made a trip to Europe and published a book of his experiences with his own drawings. He held a retrospective exhibition in the gallery Babcock (1956) and in the Whitney Museum of American Art (1967). He received several honorary awards, was a member elected to the National Institute of Arts and Literature (1958). In 1977 he published "The Diary of the Artist" with the speculations on art. His works are presented in the Metropolitan Museum, in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and in other museum collections of the United States.
