A Ukrainian painter, graphic artist, architect, art historian, ethnographer, social activist and educator. Born in Berdyansk. From 1874 till 1882 he studied in St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under the guidance of I. Kramskoy and P. Chystyakov. He had friendly relations with M. Kuznetsov, G. Ladyzhenskyy, K. Kostandi. He was awarded two silver medals (1877, 1882). After the graduation he was promoted to the class painter of the 3rd degree. He lived and worked in Kyiv, Volyn and Chernihiv. Since 1890 he exhibited his works at the exhibitions of the Society of southern Russian artists. Since 1900 he lived in Mirgorod, taught at Mirgorod School of Art and Industry (1900 - 1928). He organized Mirgorod Museum of Natural History (1920). The outstanding master of Ukrainian landscape. Author of rich graphic heritage reproduced in numerous publications and became a classic of Ukrainian culture. Author of articles on the history of Ukrainian folk art. His works are presented in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, in the Art Museums of Kharkiv, Poltava, and in other museums of Ukraine and Russia.
