A Russian artist, painter. He worked in the historical, mythological, religious and everyday life genres. Italian of the Russian origin, he was born in St. Petersburg. In his early childhood he left an orphan and was raised in the family of the famous artist, the teacher of Petersburg Academy of Arts O. Yegorov. He studied under the guidance of his tutor, and also in the Academy of Arts as an auditor. In 1831 he received the second silver medal, in 1832 - the first silver one, in 1835 - the second gold medal. After graduation (1835) he painted to order portraits of famous noblemen. Later, together with one of his patrons, Count Kutaysov, he left for Italy. During the first visit to Italy (1839 - 1844) he produced his best works associated with the life and temper of the Italians. After returning to Russia, he worked a lot painting churches, painted portraits. Academician of the Academy of Arts since 1845, taught at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1849 - 1856, since 1855 - Professor). In 1856 he for good and all left Russia and moved to Italy. His works are kept in the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery and in the Art Museum of Nizhniy Novgorod.
