A Russian engraver, watercolourist, miniaturist, painter. Born in St. Petersburg. In 1764 entered the Educational School in St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He was engaged in engraving under the guidance of A.-H. Radig and I. Shtenglin, studied painting under the guidance of A. Losenko. In 1772 he received a big gold medal with the right for pension travel abroad for three years. From 1773 till 1776 - pensioner of the Academy of Arts in London, worked in the studio of F. Bartolozzi, where he learned the technique of dotted prints. After returning to St. Petersburg in 1782 he was appointed the keeper of the prints in the Hermitage. Since 1785 - Academician of the Academy of Arts.
