An outstanding Ukrainian painter. He studied at Kyiv Drawing School of M. Murashko (1889 - 1893), St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1893 - 1900) under the guidance of I. Repin, M. Kuznetsov, worked in the workshop of A. Kuindzhi. He participated in the paintings of Isakiyivskyy Cathedral, for which he received an honorary noble title from the Emperor Mykola II. In 1918 he exhibited his works in the exhibition of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions. Since 1947 - Professor of Kyiv Institute of Art. He became the first national artist of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (1946). In 1958 in Kyiv there was opened the House-Museum of the artist. His works are also stored in the National Art Museum of Ukraine and in other museums of Ukraine.
