A famous Russian artist, animal painter. Born in St. Petersburg. His father worked in the office of the court stables. He was sent to the Educational school at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, but he failed to finish it. At his father insisted, he became an official, but he did not give up painting classes. The talent of the animal painter helped him to occupy the job of the artist at the stud farms of Russia: Hryenovskyy and Chesmenskyy. In this position, he created a whole gallery of pedigreed horses, famous for his knowledge of the breeds and the ability to transfer their features. In 1840 he left the service and devoted himself entirely to painting, joining to the Academy of Arts as an auditor. Since 1839 - permanent participant of academic exhibitions. Since 1852 Р academician, since 1864 - Professor of the Academy of Arts. Since 1864 he worked exclusively for the highest orders. The popularity of the master was extraordinary. His works were purchased by Napoleon III and Olexander II. The jury of Paris World Exhibition in 1863 highly appreciated his animalistic compositions, and the government of France awarded him the Order of the Legion of Honor. In 1867 he was awarded the gold medal of the World Exhibition in Philadelphia (the USA). His works are kept in many Russian and foreign museum collections and in private collections.
