A Russian painter. Born in the village of Ignatievo near Moscow. He received elementary art education in the private studios of Moscow (1912 - 1914). He studied at the workshop of A. Golubkina and Moscow Public free art workshop (1918 - 1920) under the guidance of K. Malevych. Participant of the art exhibitions since 1920. He was awarded the large gold medal at the International Exhibition in Paris (1937). A member of the "New Society of Painters" (1922 - 1924), the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia - the Association of the Artists of Russia (1923 - 1930), the Russian Association of Proletarian Artists (1931 - 1932). He lived and worked in Moscow. He taught in the Higher Art and Technical Institute (1929 - 1931) and Moscow Institute of Art (1934 - 1952). Professor since 1940. Active member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR since 1949. Academician-secretary of the Presidium of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1949 - 1952). Author of landscapes, portraits and genre paintings. His works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Kyiv National Museum of the Russian Art, in the Art Museums of Rostov, Khabarovsk, Ekaterynburg, and in other museum and private collections.
