A famous Russian painter and graphic artist. Born in the village of IstobensХke, Vyatka province. He studied at the Central School of Technical Drawing (1888 - 1891) under the guidance of K. Kryzhytskyy, in St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1894 - 1897) under the guidance of A. Kuindzhi. In 1897 he received the title of the artist. Since 1915 - Academician of Painting. Member of such associations as "The World of Arts" (since 1901), the Union of Russian Artists, the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia, founding member and chairman of the Society of A. Kuindzhi (1925 - 1930). He was a teacher at the drawing school of the Society for the Promotion of the Artists (1902 - 1918), Leningrad College of Art and Industry (1923 - 1926), Academy of Arts (1918 - 1929). Professor, Honoured Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic since 1935. He worked as an illustrator in the journal "Chizh" (ТThistle finchУ) (1936), designed the book by V. Bianco "Teremok" (ТTowerУ) (1936), "TrapperХs tales" (1937), wrote a book of essays about nature, adding his own watercolours ("When this happens", 1936, published in 1946). He lived and worked in Leningrad. One of the founders of symbolic landscape, was a delicate animal painter, painted genre and historical scenes. His works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and in many other museum collections.
