A famous French painter, watercolourist, engraver. Born in Uzès, France. He studied at the Engraving School in Lyon, then in Paris under the guidance of V.-J. Viber. He made his debut at the Salon of the Champs-Elysees in 1865. At the Salon of 1866 the picture of the master was acquired by Princess Mathilde Bonaparte for her collection. The same year he became a member of the Union of French artists. In 1871 he studied museum collections in the Netherlands, where he copied the canvas of Rembrandt and F. Hals. In 1872 he made a trip to Algeria. In 1893 he received the title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. He was awarded medals at the World Exhibitions in Antwerp, Berlin and Vienna. The Grand Duke, the future emperor of the Russian Empire, Olexander III bought in Paris the work of the artist "Odalisque" (now it is kept in the Hermitage). He was famous as a portrait painter, a master of historical and genre motifs. His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum, the Louvre, The d'Orsay Museum, in the Art Museums of Amiens, Bordeaux, Boston, Bucharest, Hamburg, Cologne, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Tokyo, Philadelphia, Chicago, etc.
