An outstanding Russian painter. One of the most famous and most titled Russian artists. Born in Chuguyiv in Kharkiv. He studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1864 - 1971). Pensioner of the Academy of Arts in Italy and France (1873 - 1876). Professor of the Academy of Arts (1894 - 1907), rector of the Academy of Arts (1898 - 1899). Member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions since 1878. He did a lot for Ukrainian culture; he wrote articles about Ukrainian art, supported creativity of Ukrainian artists of the late •§•th - early ••th century, and the activity of drawing schools of M. Murashko in Kyiv, of M. Rayevska-Ivanova in Kharkiv, Odessa Drawing School. The master taught M. Pymonenko, O. Murashko, F. Krasytskyy, S. Prokhorov. His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Kyiv National Museum of the Russian Art, in the Art Museums of Saratov, Irkutsk, Kharkov, etc.
